Knitting + Baseball = Joy

In the Upper Deck at Shea, Passing Time With America’s Pastime - New York Times:
I knew I wasn't the only one who liked to Knit while watching or listening to baseball:
"“The rhythms of baseball fit the rhythms of needle arts,” Barbara Paley, marketing specialist for the National NeedleArts Association, said yesterday."
Now I just need to learn how to knit those awesome gloves and balls!

3D Scanners, the Red Sox and Graduation, oh my!

Ok, haven't posted in a while, but I am very busy. I have exactly four days left of my undergraduate education! I have also finally embarked on my 3D scanning project, which is very very cool. Check out the website I made for the project here: http://sophia.smith.edu/~rdines/3dscanning
3D scanning and 3D printing are starting to really get noticed in popular culture, check out this article in the New York Times that talks about a future with 3D scanning.

Also, I recently had the very exciting opportunity to go on a field trip to a Red Sox game, including a talk with Tom Werner, and some time in the owners' box next to the dugout. amazing! I posted the pictures on my Picasa account.

Well, back to work, I have to finish it or else no graduation for me!

Return from March adventures!

Phew, glad March is over with, I'm exhausted!
I've returned to Smith and am recovering from adventures all across the country, from Boston to Florida, California.
I went to my first Boston St. Patrick's Day Parade (I've never really celebrated it, not being Irish and all...), which was a lot of fun. Then I went to a RED SOX SPRING TRAINING GAME in Fort Meyers, FL, we beat the Twins 6-5 (although we were up 6-0 at one point, but thats the Sox for you!). The park is so small, you get to be really close to the field, and the players no matter where you are, so I was psyched! Note the palm trees in the back of the picture! I also got a good shot of Papi in his classic batting stance. Other notes: I saw the back of Dice-K's head and Lowell hit a solo shot homerun, the only one of the game. I was super psyched! See him in the far left corner watching Papi at bat? Standing next to Okaji? Ok, I have a zoomed in picture too, if you can't see him.
Then, I jetsetted off to California for something very secret and exciting (you can email me if you don't know what I am talking about, but I'm sure you do know) that I think I should not be posting on my blog. Well, lets just say it was AMAZING, but I was not allowed to take any pictures.
Then I got back to school, but the excitement wasn't done yet. On Thursday, Valentino Achak Deng came to talk at Smith before about 30 people. I was there and shook his hand twice and tried to talk to him without gushing. If you don't know who Valentino is, you should read his biography, What is the What by Dave Eggers, it is unforgetable.

Man, does he have a lot to say!

Curt Schilling's new blog is, well, the greatest thing since sliced bread. I think it is so great that a baseball player is blogging, especially an eloquent Red Sox like Curt.
Here is a list of players whose blogs I would NOT want to see:
1. Johnny Damon (is he literate?)
2. Manny (it would make no sense!)
3. ?
I am predicting this will be the next big thing in baseball, all of the literate players will begin to blog, thus giving more opportunities for procrastinating for the fans! Hooray!

Big Papi, Little Puppy

In honor of Red Sox Spring Training starting last week, I am posting this picture that warmed my heart. Its Big Papi and his Little Puppy, Riley.

It doesn't get any cuter than this!

"I could have been happy... I could have been a Yankees fan"

That is a quote from the movie I saw last night, Game 6, which is NOT REALLY A SPORTS MOVIE. I say this so people won't be deterred from seeing this wonderful movie. Don DeLillo, author of White Noise (one of my favorite books) and Americana, wrote the screenplay, his first one. The movie is soooo classicly DeLillo, lots of long lists, surreal dialogue, references to poisonous gases and medication, everything you would expect in a DeLillo book, but now in movie form! This movie was about as indie as it gets, there was almost no press, no hype, it didn't play in any theaters that I know of and it took me a long time to find the trailer on the internet! Robert Downey Jr. was fabulously insane in the movie.

Anyhow, so about the quote. I feel like it sums up how I feel right now. Red Sox are breaking my heart again, in high style. And there is even talk of dealing David Wells! This is a sad state of affairs, that makes me understand the tragic existence of fans of teams like the Tampa Bay D-Rays.

Dreams of Trot Nixon.....and buried Volvo SUV's

I am watching the Red Sox game right now, Trot Nixon just hit a long single, and it reminded me that I dreamt that I met Trot last night. I met Terry Francona too, and I gave him a big hug and yelled, "Tito!" and he was short, like my height, which was weird.

I digress.
So, I am working at WheelsTV right now, helping deploy the new site. They call me THE WEBMEISTER. I like that. Check out the site when it goes live next week.
So, you are probably wondering about the buried Volvo. In honor of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Volvo has buried one SUV somewhere in the world and invited everyone to look for it. With the help of a treasure map, of course. They call it, THE HUNT. Join the hunt, solve fun puzzles that will take you closer and closer to the treasure, how much fun does this sound like? See the commercial below:

Thats all for now, will try to update more often from now on.

"DAVID ORTIZ SAYS MANNY ALSO INCOMPREHENSIBLE IN SPANISH"

WARNING! WARNING! This is a RED SOX themed blog entry!

I'm to start off by saying that I have been considering becoming a responsible blogger....like publishing an RSS feed or titling my posts (which I will now begin to do) or providing links
for archiving. Oh well, I've got a start at least.

First off, I've finally gotten myself a jar of that Big Papi Salsa I've been dying to try (FYI- I got it at Shaws). It should be fabulous! Although I was quick to notice that it is not the same salsa that he talks about in the Comcast commercial (which is mango salsa, this isn't). Speaking of Papi, I was so surprised to hear that he was thrown out of the game last night! Since we are at the LA Angels right now (they are still playing in Anaheim, right? I don't get it), the games don't start until 10, so I usually go to bed before they are over. I read about it today and thought his statement about it was really hilarious: "It's not like I was going crazy out there," said Ortiz. "Seriously, I'm leading the league in walks for a reason. I think I know what I'm doing out there. You never see me complain about a pitch that is a strike. I guess that follows me when I'm playing here.
"Dude, seriously, I've been getting bad calls all year long. But it's OK. You can get a bad call in one at-bat, maybe two at-bats. But in five at-bats? Get a bad call in all of them. I ain't taking that, bro. This is not a game you play just for fun. All I do is go to the plate and hit. I'm not out there playing defense. And I know the strike zone very well."

Also in Red Sox news, Bellhorn has been designated for assignment. I guess I saw this coming, with Graffanino hitting .315 (compare with Bellhorn's .216), but I am still a little sad. Bellhorn was so great in ast year's post season. Although, I must admit that I was one of those people who mercilessly mocked him when he struck out. Anyhow, this picture, accompanied by the caption "Mark is Trying to Work His Way Back." I have to admit that he has the hair of a Red Sox player.

Changing the subject, I randomly came across a blog entry about the really weird religious house a few doors down from me. I've been trying to find information about it for a while now.

As promised, I am reporting on the Ansel Adams show at the MFA. It is really really amazing! It opens tomorrow, so you should go see it if you are in the area. There are hundreds of pictures there, and a few with the same negative printed twice on two different kinds of paper, which was so cool to compare! Adams began printing on warm toned paper and had a hazy, slightly unfocused look to his photos. He soon realized that cool tone paper and sharp focus was the best way for him to go, and man oh man is that obvious when you look at two prints next to each other. There are also some of his prints on folding screens, which are very interesting and rare.
