Nazi Virus to Attack on January 5th

Ok, this is the strangest and most disturbing story I've read all year, Apparently security experts around the world have found that there is going to be a scheduled attack of the Sober worm on January 5th, 2006 to coincide with the 87th anniversary of the forming of the Nazi Party. I never would have believed this if I had not read it in a legitimate source. So now is the time to update your virus protection and not open any suspicious emails (the Sober worm emails look like they are coming from the government).
ABC is also running the story, although they are saying that the attack will be on January 6th.

Where's Bono?

Where's Bono? I don't know, but this web project will help you calculate the probabilty of finding him at any location in Dublin's cultural quarter. Its my birthday and I'll cry if I want to...


Here's a story that recently riled me up: Many Women at Elite Colleges Set Career Path to Motherhood
I can't say exactly why this bugs me so much...I think just hearing about so many women who are privileged to be receiving these amazing educations and then have no intention of doing anything for the world. I mean, I thought we were heading towards an era of great women leaders in politics, science, education, art, business etc. etc. I guess I just didn't realize that so many people have the single minded goal of being a housewife.

Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY CATE! I wish I was 21 like you.


In other random news: I can't remember if I've shared this game with people before, but if I haven't, this is something everyone must see. It is Pac-Mondrian, oh yes. Two of my favorite things rolled up into one! In the game, you are pacman running around Broadway Boogie Woogie eating up the squares with jazz music playing in the background. Super fun time!

Rotoscoping

I just found out that the maker of Waking Life, Richard Linklater, is directing the rotoscoped screen adaptation of Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly. Of course, as an amateur rotoscope artist myself, this is really exciting for me. Bob Sabiston is going to be the art director again, which is great. I've heard that this film is going to be a little tighter and more traditional than Waking Life, which was very obviously done by many different artists with very different styles. A Scanner Darkly will be more cohesive.

I feel like rotoscoping is starting to become visible in pop culture... those new McDonald's commercials for the fruit and walnut salad thing seem to be made in a style that is similar to rotoscoping. I can't find an online version, but I have this one tiny screen shot.

Pac-Mondrian and The Yes Men

So, I've been reading Modernism by Richard Weston for one of my art history classes and really enjoying it! Weston manages to turn a scholarly approach to studying architecture into a page-turning (at least for me) book. I would definately reccomend this for anyone interested in modern architecture.

Now, to completely change the subject, I think that everyone should play this new game, Pac-Mondrian. What an ingenious game! You are pac-man, running around gobbling up squares
from Mondrian's "Broadway Boogie Woogie" to the sounds of the jazz that Mondrian listened to. The game takes on a somewhat improvisational quality, as each time you eat a square, a different sound is added to the background music. The game was created by the Prize Budget For Boys, an online artist group.

Speaking of online artist collectives, The Yes Men comes out tomorrow! I am so excited, it is already on my Netflix queue. Don't know who The Yes Men are? I don't even know where to begin. For one, they are responsible for several "hijinks" including gwbush.com (an anti-Bush site posing as a Bush supporting site) and gatt.org (an imitation WTO site). The Bush site actually created a small scandal, which led Bush to proclaim, "There ought to be limits to freedom." Read about the story for yourself. As for the WTO site, The Yes Men have actually
gotten invitations to conferences as the WTO and attended, only to espouse ridiculous theories. See The Horribly Stupid Stunt for actual video of The Yes Men impersonating WTO officials. Go to their site if you want to know more, I personally love these international pranksters.


Speaking of general disallusionment, we have Outfoxed right now on Netflix, and I plan to watch it soon.
